An increasing call for including glia in the BRAIN mapping initiative

NIH neuroscientist Douglas Fields recently called for glia to be included in the BRAIN mapping initiative. The initiative, part of a new Presidential focus aimed at revolutionizing our understanding of the human brain, was announced in April 2013. The original intent of the project was to map out neuronal connections, but as Fields pointed out in the September 4 edition of the journal Nature, such an approach would miss the essential contribution of glia to synaptic signaling. Now Fields has been joined by other neuroscientists and by the BRAIN working group, which includes leading neurologists. More detail can be found in an article in Bioscience Technology, which includes a quote from GliaCure President Phil Haydon.
